The new Cherries had been in Vietnam for almost two weeks at this point. Now they are on a helicopter and flying over the thick jungle to link up with their new Infantry Company. Chapter six chronicles the experiences of the author's first twenty-four hours as he joins his fellow soldiers on patrols through the thick, dark jungle. The author (Pollack) is surprised to find himself assigned to a squad that includes two soldiers from his former training platoon at Fort Polk Louisiana. That day begins with a happy reunion, but turns out to be the most difficult and most fearful of his life up to that point.
