Chapter 1: Betrayal Breakup, my portrayal of divorce is exceptional because it is executed from the inside, not after the event. Written as a journal in real time, the book interweaves my daily ordeal and our ongoing travails as a couple with the insights and experience of psychotherapy. Betrayed, the first chapter, draws you right into the cauldron of marital disintegration. After a short introduction to set the scene, you are taken into a therapy session, where I lay bare my predicament and not long afterwards mention my suspicion that my wife is having an affair. This chapter also touches on the whole gamut of emotions I experienced at the time: confusion, helplessness and a deep sense of loss mixed with sorrow. However, there is also a glimmer of hope, evidenced in the poem by Richard Garnett, which really spoke to me in my hour of need. Breakup is my version of enduring divorce hell. But if you are ending an important relationship, you might be undergoing a similar process.
